AMMON ROST
Jake Genovesi operates in the field between abstract and figurative painting. In his paintings, Genovesi leaves large blanks of monochrome colors pointing towards the abstract painting. Simultaneously, he captures recognizable motifs such as animals and nature objects. The viewer is thus met by pure contrasts, the contrast between clear monochrome colors and animal figures; between raw brushstrokes and large color surfaces. Genovesi’s work shows an original spirituality and the language of his figures and color compositions gives voice to primary emotions. He establishes a space for reflection and wonder. The colored surfaces appear as something for the viewer's eyes to either quickly pass by or sink into. Then leading our gaze to the animal motifs, mysteriously placed in these vibrating pools of color. This contrasting combination is perhaps precisely what makes Genovesi’s works so fascinating.
Jake Genovesi (b. 1990), lives and works in New York.
