DAN SCHEIN

Dan Schein (b. 1985, Johannesburg, South Africa) is a New York-based artist working in oil painting and drawing, recognized for expressive brushwork and an immediate, loosely handled style. His figurative and landscape compositions depict imagined scenes shaped by absurdity, myth, and sardonic humor, combining traditional painting motifs with references drawn from both art history and contemporary visual culture. His latest works increasingly engage with imagery inspired by medieval and early Renaissance painting, filtered through personal and political anxieties.

In recent years, Schein has moved away from extensive preparatory sketches toward a more intuitive process, allowing the act of painting itself to determine each composition. He received his BFA from the State University of New York – Purchase College in 2008 and his MFA from the Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia in 2011.
